I was 11 and the Preppy Handbook was at its height of popularity. I finally convinced my mother to buy me a real Pendleton outfit: a bright red wool jacket, white cotton blouse, and bright red plaid pleated wool skirt. Not what you'd call practical for Tucson, Arizona, but every time I wore it I felt like a queen. Hindsight about clothing styles is never pretty, is it?
