Mary Ann Stephens

“You’re not bored, you’re just not busy. Find what you love and get busy!” So my mother taught me. As a child, what I loved most was her linen closet. On the bottom, a blue basket of fabric scraps sat waiting for a fiber-enthralled child to deem them treasure. Above, her yellow notions box beckoned with overflowing rainbows of thread and floss. Inside it, a treasure trove of gadgets invited experiments. Way, way back on that middle shelf, if I was really lucky (or perhaps, if I had actually been behaving myself)—Eureka!—a glorious ball of yarn!
