When I was a little girl my Gran encouraged me to plant some seeds and watch them grow. She bought me a child-sized watering can and every evening I would merrily water my sweet-pea seeds, singing the nursery rhyme “Mary Mary.” Eventually my watering can became know as Mary-Mary, and Mary-Mary became a verb meaning to go out to water the plants. So I guess in my imaginary garden I would be contrary and have cockle shells and pretty maids all in a row growing there.
