(or gauffrage in French) is a technique in Japanese woodblock printing for embossing paper with a carved block that has not been inked. Contrasting fulled garter stitch and stockinette creates textured monochrome patterns that resemble the technique.

Needles & Notions: Size 8 US / 5 mm circular needle, 40” / 100 cm or longer
Two D–shaped purse handles 7¼” / 18.5 cm wide at base (sample uses Lantern Moon wooden D–ring handles), two oval buttons 2½” / 64 mm wide by 1¼” / 32 mm high (sample uses Lantern Moon Chrysanthemum Oval in Black Oyster), sewing needle, heavy–duty thread

Gauge: 18 sts and 26 rows = 4” / 10 cm in St st before fulling

Construction Notes: The finished fabric is fulled lightly. The embossed pattern results in a nubbly, raised, shadowy stripe outside, with a smooth inner side. No seaming required.
