Barbara Parry

Last winter I was reminded of the surprising way in which good things can come out of bad situations. My hilltop farm was hammered by an ice storm that swept the New England the week before Christmas. Along with many of our neighbors, we were left stranded in our homes by downed trees and telephone poles, without power for days. Not only did neighbors pull together to help clear roads and driveways and check in on one another, but utility workers arrived in convoys from many states to get us back on line. The compassionate concern of others was the best gift of the season.
