Mary Ann Stephens

On 9/11/01, my husband made his usual good morning call home. Just before we hung up, he mentioned he'd pop across the street to do some quick errands at the Trade Center. Moments later, I watched the television in horror, screaming 'Run! Run!' as the first tower collapsed. As the second tower fell, I hadn't heard a word from him. My world stopped. Hours passed and the phone was silent. And then finally, finally, it rang. 'I'm fine. Sorry, nobody's been able to get a call out. I've hiked up to 14th Street to get a call out. Yes, I'm fine!'
