My long-suffering husband taught me to drive some years ago. Although I still ride public transit regularly, if I look back I can identify ways in which my life has expanded because of this ability—interviews or meetings I couldn’t have reached, volunteer commitments I wouldn’t have made, visits to out-of-town family and friends I would have missed. The convenience factor aside, there are many times when driving makes a big difference.
